Saravan
The Saravan spent much of her life working the coast as a tug. In 1988 the proprietor of a local marine company donated $500 and the woefully timeworn wooden tug Saravan to the Ladysmith Maritime Society.
Our skilled and qualified members contributed the necessary expertise to restore the Saravan and the Town of Ladysmith provided work space in the machine shop on the Expo Legacy Site. Three years later on June 1, 1991, the Saravan was returned to the sea. She has been in service ever since.
Since her restoration, thousands of people have boarded the Saravan for tours, special events, or private functions. Tourists, local residents, organizations, town ambassadors, families, and visiting dignitaries have all enjoyed cruises in our local waters.
Saravan has won prizes while representing the Town of Ladysmith and the Ladysmith Maritime Society at festivals such as the Victoria Classic Wooden Boat Festival, the Cowichan Bay Maritime Festival, the Ganges Harbour Sea Festival and the Maple Bay Wooden boat Festival.
C. A. Kirkegaard
The C.A. Kirkegaard was originally built as a crew boat for C.I.L.. She moved logging crews to and from sites around the Gulf Islands. Later in her life, the C. A. Kirkegaard worked as a ferry in local waters.
After the C.A. Kirkegaard was donated to the Ladysmith Maritime Society, our expert craftsmen in the Maritime Society went to work to restore her while, at the same time, providing vocational training to young people through a government program.
Today the 29 foot, beautifully restored C.A. Kirkegaard proudly plies the waters of the Gulf Island again, this time as an ambassador for the Town of Ladysmith and the Maritime Society.
C.A. Kirkegaard has won prizes while representing the Town of Ladysmith and the Ladysmith Maritime Society at festivals such as the Victoria Classic Wooden Boat Festival, the Cowichan Bay Maritime Festival, the Ganges Harbour Sea Festival and the Maple Bay Wooden boat Festival.
Maritimer
Our tour boat began life as a lifeboat. She came to us as a gift from the wife of the owner after his death. Maritimer has been lovingly restored and today she carries tourists from near and far, visiting the history, culture and wildlife of our harbour.
Tours on the Maritimer begin on the first weekend in June and continue through September. For more information, please visit our Tours page.
